K.O.!

From Reddit:
Even though I wasn’t born in Tomsk, that’s the town I called home. I think the reason why the accident wasn’t as popular as Chernobyl, was because it’s in the middle of Russia, with no other countries around it. Plus it was a secret town, probably because they were enriching weapons grade nuclear materials.
The weird part was that Tomsk, the big town near Sversk (Tomsk 7), did not have a zoo. We took school trips to Tomsk 7 to visit theirs. Tomsk 7 was a very clean city. Our teachers told us to respect it and not litter.
One day I was at my friends house, I believe on the 6th floor. Playing around, being kids. Out of nowhere we hear a scream, it was my friends sister startled because the drawers moved a couple of centimeters away from the wall. The rest felt nothing. Then one of the parents went to see what was going on, the power went out. When my friends dad came back from outside he said that all of the windows on the first two floors were smashed. Then someone noticed a big plume of smoke going up in the distance. We were kids, we had no clue what was in that direction, our parents did. We all got inside of out tiny piece of shit car and drove across town to our apartment.
My best friend at that time lived in the same building, a floor below. It was a whole family living in a studio. Boy and a girl, mother and dad, grandmother, and a dog. They were poor, but managed to live a happy life. The day after the accident my mother put me on the plane, she could afford only one ticket at the time. So I flew to Voronezh to my grandma. After a couple of months I flew back, went back to school. Then I heard that the girl from downstairs got some radiation poisoning, and got cancer. She lost all of her hair, kids made fun of her. As her good friend I was there to help and protect her as much as I could. Then in the summer, I went back to my grandma. Got a regular call from my mom, and she told me that my friend died.
